About the PaMAR Project
PaMAR is a 5-year project (2023 - 2028) implemented by Fauna & Flora in partnership with six local NGO partners: Associação de Conservação da Biodiversidade Biflores (Biflores), Associação Projeto Biodiversidade (APB), Associação Projeto Vitó, Associação Terrimar - Ambiente e Desenvolvimento Sustentável (Terrimar), Biosfera I, and Fundação Maio Biodiversidade (FMB). The initiative is funded with support from the Blue Action Fund, Oceans 5 (a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors), and Arcadia.
PaMAR supports marine biodiversity in Cabo Verde by helping local leaders and communities improve marine resource management and expand marine protected areas (MPAs) through broad collaboration with the government, NGOs, people from communities that depend on marine resources for their livelihoods, scientists, and small businesses.

This project aims to achieve benefits for Cabo Verde's people and nature through the delivery of five key outputs:
1. Reinforcement of the national MPA network;
2. Reinforcement of MPA management capacity across stakeholders in Cabo Verde;
3. Increased knowledge about sustainable marine co-management across society;
4. Improved MPA management and progress toward sustainable financing;
5. Improved livelihoods to support the sustainable use of MPA resources.
Some of the signs of project success will include: stabilisation or increase in populations of commercially or ecologically important species (such as parrotfish and the African hind C. taeniops); improved livelihood conditions for households who depend on fishing for income; and improved attitudes towards protection of marine biodiversity in project-affected communities.

Where we work

PaMAR's teams work on the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sal, Maio, Fogo, Brava, and the Rombo islets. Note that not every island has an MPA site linked to this project, but we work with local communities there because they may depend on resources from one of the sites nearby.
Existing MPAs are indicated by the blue highlighted areas below, with the projected expansion areas highlighted in yellow. Note that areas to be expanded will be delineated in agreement with the environmental authority managing them.
